Termites

Termites are wood destroying insects common in most areas of Texas. Subterranean termites live in the soil. They seek for wood buried beneath or in contact with the soil. Termites can gain access to a structure through cracks in the concrete.  The probability that wooden structures will be attacked by termites within 10 to 20 years is greater than 70 percent in Texas.  Proper treatment of the soil with termiticidal chemicals before construction (pre-treatment) reduces the threat of termites.  Few areas in Texas have pre-treatment ordinances, so only a small percentage of homeowners enjoys such security of termite problems.

Destruction

This picture shows the destruction created by termites on a pier and beam home structure.  A termite's tube is running on a pier to the right.  As the termites progress, additional tubes were formed hanging from the beam in the top center of the picture.  Notice the wood destruction below the tubes.

Swarming

Every year in early in mid to late March through early May, termites go through a swarming behavior.  This is done when the king and queen termites leave the colony to establish new colonies. When the time is right they will all leave the colony. This activity usually occurs during 70 degree temperatures and spring rains.  If you see hundreds of flying bugs in your home, it maybe a sign of infestation. Termites are not capable of a long sustained flight you may see them fluttering around the ground or just walking about. They rely on the wind to carry them to their new home. After their maiden flight they shed their wings, so the presence of hundreds of wings is also a sign of an infestation.
